T.I. Amplifiers Restoration
There were (3) T.I. amplifiers used from 1964 to 1971, but only under (2) GM part numbers.
The explanation for this is as follows:
When T.I. was introduced in 1964 the cover plate for the die cast housing had a cupped edge around its periphery (now referred to a round edge cover plate). The cup was to retain a semi-liquid that sealed the die cast housing to cover interface. This amplifier design was released under GM part number 1115005. Unfortunately this type of seal turned out to be highly problematic & therefore was replaced with a more typical die cut rubber gasket. The revision date for this change was 17 Jan 1967. This new seal did not require a cupped edge so the cover plate was redesigned without the cup (now referred to as a straight edge cover plate). However GM did not change the part number for this revision which created (2) different designs with only (1) part number! In 1968 the amplifier was changed again but this time the change was the electrical connector. The round electrical grommet on the first part number amplifier was replaced with a “weather-proof” 27 inch pigtail. This amplifier was released under part number 1115343. The print date for this change was 10 Jan 1968. This amplifier part number was used all the way to the end of T.I. usage in 1971 model year. Interesting to note is the electronics inside the amplifier were all the same from 1964 through 1971.
